After last year’s “Ravechella” where the Sahara tent was quite literally packed with some of the biggest talent in the EDM world from open to close of the entire festival, expectations were very high for electronic music for 2013. When the long-awaited lineup finally dropped, the internet went alight with both  complaints and praise towards the relative obscurity and lack of top-billing EDM headliners. But we’re here to assure you, EDM is alive and well this year at Coachella, and with the pop-radio EDM acts absent, it gives room to really get into some amazing talent without the not-so-amazing bandwagon crowd. The lineup is so deep that there will actually be, for the first time ever, a 5th stage dedicated to the deeper grooves of dance music, as hinted at and confirmed by Jason Bentley.

Here’s just a few acts that are reasons enough the EDM of Coachella (Not necessarily confined just to the Sahara any longer) will live up to, if not exceed last year’s lofty expectations:

Dog Blood

This hotly anticipated act is the joint project of two of the hardest working, and hardest hitting talents in the EDM world: Boys Noize and Skrillex. And no, this isn’t the noisy Skrill-step you may have heard back in 2011, the cross-genre electro-techno-bass sets that this duo throw down are absolutely dynamic with styles ranging from disco to reggae to metal-like guitar riffs, and not missing a beat in between.

Tommy Trash

After a year of absolutely killing it with amazing releases, including a Grammy-nominated remix for deadmau5′ track with Chris James “The Veldt”, this Australian producer and DJ has been carving out a space for himself as one of the most in-demand DJs this year. Throw in his recent mega-hit with Coachella veteran Sebastian Ingrosso “Reload” and you know this set is going to be one for the books.

Bassnectar

To say Bassnectar’s following is devout is an understatement. The bone-shattering bass is aggressive, yet accessible, and tons of fun. And he loves his fans. Make sure to look your best for the family photos:

Infected Mushroom

The visual show alone is enough to blow your mind:

Dillon Francis 

The crown prince of Moombahton, the cat-loving prankster’s music has an infectious energy that you simply can’t deny. And with a long track record of hijinks and guest appearances/shoutouts, don’t be surprised if some of his friends show up to party too.

Major Lazer 

Diplo’s ‘Jamaican’ alter-ego/project is an entire experience. With frenzied dancers ‘expressing themselves’ and guest MCs, and Diplo crowdsurfing in a giant inflatable ball, a Major Lazer set is just a really amazing party and is an absolutely crowd pleaser.  No two sets are the same, so don’t make the mistake of skipping it cause you “saw it a few years ago”.

Baauer

Come for the “Harlem Shake”, stay for a set full of some top-notch trap music from one of the genre’s groundbreaking artists helping to popularize and carve out a name for Trap music in 2013. Don’t expect to film one of those videos though… it’s dead.

Moby

The godfather of modern EDM. Don’t discount him (or Paul Oakenfold, for that matter) based on their age and the fact they were at their peak when you were a kid… there’s a reason they’re still around and getting these kinds of bookings. Get ready for a musical history lesson.

Knife Party

What started as a side project has taken a life of its own for former members of Pendulum. Perhaps you’ve heard “Internet Friends“. That was just the beginning. This is not a set for the faint of heart. It is a Knife Party, after all.

Hardwell 

There’s a good reason he ended up on #6 of the DJ Mag top 100 list. This young star not only produces hit-after-hit, but runs Revealed Recordings with a wheelhouse packed full of some of the top festival-sized bangers this year.

Excision

We’re equal opportunity here, and the bone-crushing sounds of Dubstep need some recognition too. Excision’s 100,000 Watt sound system and eletrifying visual show in the form of “The Executioner” is something you have to see and hear to believe.

Last year Coachella had French wunderkind Madeon taking the stage of the Sahara tent at a tender age of 17. This year we’ve got Spanish star Danny Avila, whose whirlwind tour across the US and hit track “Breaking Your Fall” is only the beginning of what is sure to be a huge career.

Maya Jane Coles

If you need any reason to take a break from the Big-Room sound of the Sahara tent, Maya Jane Coles is it. Predicted to be one of the artists christening the new deeper, groovy house stage, this British DJ has been making waves in the last 2 years as one of the most dynamic and promising talents in house music.

Disclosure

Disclosure may not end up in the Sahara tent, but this duo of UK Garage influenced brothers are a must-see act, with a groovy and deep sound that has been making its rounds all over the world, touching down on the West Coast for the first time. You won’t want to miss this.

Pretty Lights

Pretty Lights music is an otherworldly blend of electro/dubstep/funk/soul fueled by samples of classics that are bent and twisted into beautiful glitchy melodies. Oh, and he used Etta James’ “Somethings Got A Hold of Me” sample long before Avicii did for “Levels”. It’s only fitting he’ll be playing his much better use of the sample in the same spot a year later.

Eric Prydz

Don’t go expecting a neon-clad “Call on Me” kind of set, unafraid to dive into his Pryda and Cirez D catalogs for progressive sets that are heavy and complex, Eric Prydz takes you on an intense journey through music that wraps you up in emotional builds with cathartic breaks. It’s likely that he’ll be in charge of closing out the Sahara for the weekend, so you know he’ll have some big tricks up his sleeves to wrap up an unforgettable weekend.

So the combination of these two may not be too unusual or out of place, but the product sure is… I can safely say that there is now a Borgore song that I like. That’s pretty incredible in itself.

The song channels the vibe of last summer’s must-have drop from Sandro Silva & Quntinio’s “Epic”, which Carnage is no stranger to with his “Festival Trap refix“, and you can tell he must have liked that huge synth build into a minimal bumping bass sound… along with everyone who heard “Epic”. It’s a switcheroo in the best kind of way, the kind of tracks that keep you on your toes in a live set. I honestly can’t tell where Borgore fits into the picture, but whatever he did, he didn’t do what he normally does… so he should keep doing it.

As Carnage says on his Facebook: “this isnt… “Trap” … this isn’t “dubstep” this isnt a combination of both genres combined… this is HOUSE MUSIC…. if u dont like it.. FUCK OFF”
