Without fail, L.A.-based DJ and producer MAKJ brings relentless power to each new track. This one starts off with supercharged synths that plummet with sharpness right into the kind of thumping drop everyone raves. If MAKJ keeps it up with star-quality productions like these, he’ll continue to make waves on the electro house scene and rub shoulders with the A-list talent that supports him (namely Tiesto, Hardwell, and Bingo Players). “Hold Up” is set for official release on May 13. On Friday, April 26th the Avalon Hollywood was met with three expressly unique acts that kept the bass trembling throughout the climactic night. The Loops of Fury kicked it all off with one of the best sets I’ve experienced at CONTROL this year. Their performance included massive electro selections and charged on with a crisp techno flow. This British duo has mastered an eclectic style of their own, and I’m definitely keeping an eye out for their next takeover.

Alvin Risk was up next and began with an important question: “Who’s ready to get weird?” This guy truly killed it with a set that covered all bases. Moments of crowd-pleasing brostep, moombah and a generous helping of trap made for a pumped-up hour and a half. There were endless twists and turns throughout the mayhem – one of the sickest moments was when Alvin dropped Dillon Francis’ classic “Masta Blasta” immediately after his epic hit “Skyclad.” Everything soared to the next level when Skrillex appeared at the decks seemingly out of nowhere. Needless to say, fans went berserk. The superstar spent about a half-hour sharing the spotlight with his OWSLA protege before stepping down. Alvin continued for a bit longer after Skrilly departed – even hopping on the mic and singing a few lyrics of an original track. I was already impressed with what I had heard from Alvin but after this blowout performance my respect for him has grown tremendously. This guy may rock a pair of glasses and an argyle vest 24/7 but he’s got a knack for causing a scene.

Figure followed Alvin and set the mood with horror-movie audio before he started spinning. Once he began, the floor became a headbanger’s paradise in no time. As expected, he delivered a solid bass-heavy set with grinding energy that never let up.

As per usual, CONTROL was off the charts that night and my perpetual craving for bass was satiated. This Friday night, the venue will welcome Dieselboy, Terravita and Doorly – jump on tickets here.

The latest morsel from power duo Candyland is a trapped-out makeover of the festive Daft Punk classic “One More Time.” In this release, homage is paid to the masters of the EDM comeback through high-pitched synths and slick, wavy sub-bass. They premiered this one during their anticipated performance at Dallas’ Meltdown Music Festival this past weekend. Snag it for free via Soundcloud.
