The music fades. The lights go down.
Where do you find yourself when its all over?

In this highly teased and anticipated new video from the boys of Swedish House Mafia, we see a glimpse at a simpler life, away from the bright lights and booming bass. Set to a stripped down cover of the Swede’s hit song “Leave the World Behind” by Linnéa Martinsson (who previously sang Adrian Lux’s “Teenage Crime”) under the moniker Lune, her haunting rendition of the huge house classic fits the chilling yet serene video.

It’s funny because the video/setting/theme of the song seems to imply that Steve, Axwell, and Sebastian quite literally left the world behind and returned to their roots and a simpler life (So simple that Steve is seen brushing his teeth in a waterfall…?) but we all know that just as quickly as the curtain fell on Swedish House Mafia, the 3 went off and hit the ground running with packed solo schedules. We’ll suspend our disbelief for the sake of art and watch the 3 wander aimlessly in a video that kinda just makes them all look depressed… But really, it’s a pretty cover and a visually striking video, and let’s be honest: It’s just good to see the Swedes again.

and this happens:

An essential mix is not a bad way to relaunch your image, and Angello sure made the most of his time in the spotlight. Over the course of two hours he showed his underground credentials, the stable of talent his record label has accrued, and that he still embraces the songs that made him a house hold name. It’s a great mix that shows the many paths that Steve Angello might follow and jump between for the rest of his career.

The mix starts by dancing on the edge of the underground for the first half hour. While nothing that burned up the Beatport charts is played here, all the songs are guaranteed to burn up the dance floor. It is dark and deep in spots, but still has enough appeal to keep any listener interested. While impressive in it’s own right, it is a warm up for what is to come.

Around the thirty minute mark the mix takes a noticeable change when Steve drops an edit of “Hit It” vs. “Miami 2 Ibiza.” It’s an incredible mash up that changes the mood of the mix from a techy dance party to an all out rager. He then throws down tunes like Hard Rock Sofa’s “Let Me Hear You Scream” and two more of the former super group’s hits “Greyhound” and “Antidote.” In this section Steve really shows off the talent he has assembled on Size Records. He features AN21, Max Vangeli, Hard Rock Sofa, and others who have released songs on Size. I would say he might be trying to force his brand into the spotlight, but the tracks are all amazing and flow so well that it doesn’t feel like that is the case here. It just shows how talented the artists assembled on Size really are.

As the mix winds down Steve pulls out the heavy hitters. “Don’t You Worry Child” “Save the World” and remixes of each close out the two hour set. While it may seem way too similar to what Swedish House Mafia did with the songs, the rest of the set was unique enough for this ending to be appreciated. These songs closed out shows on One Last Tour for a reason. They sound great and leave audiences feeling amazing. The end of this mix is no different. As the last notes faded away there was a smile on my face. The three swedes may have gone their separate ways, but their music will bind them together forever.

Steve Angello will be at the Encore Beach Club April 20th in Las Vegas. Tickets are available here.

Swedish House Mafia’s One Last Tour reached it’s dramatic conclusion at Ultra this past weekend. If you weren’t aware of that, then I’m not sure how you found yourself on Wanticketsblog to read this post. Thousands were in attendance to watch the Swedes say farewell, and over 200,000 watched on Ultra’s Live Stream from all over the world. Luckily that live stream was recorded, and thanks to EDMtunes it’s now on Soundcloud, and available for free download.

The three got their final party started with Axwell & Sebastian Ingrosso’s “We Come We Rave We Love” before launching into “Greyhound.” Soon after Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike’s massive “Wakanda” boomed out through speakers (the track can already be crowned the song of 2013 festival season before March has even ended). From there on out, the set was a celebration of everything Swedish House Mafia. There are the raging tracks like “Antidote” the euphoric tracks like their remix of “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall” and the ones that floor you like their bootleg of “Swagnum P.I.” Then there is “Save the World” which was saved for their encore. The track inspires the feelings of love and hope that I will remember Swedish House Mafia for.

Having been lucky enough to attend both shows they played here in Los Angeles, I can say that this set felt a little rushed. The hour and a half they were given seemed so short compared to the two hours they played here. Of course on a Sunday night I was painfully aware of each minute passing, and found myself wishing the set would never end. Unfortunately it did, and as the curtain was closing, the trio had their arms draped over each other as they looked out onto a sea of thousands. Everyone holding their breath trying to keep the moment alive for as long as possible. They disappeared from view from the crowd, but those of us watching online got a behind the scenes look as the trio embraced. The three man huddle looked to be equal parts of sadness, relief and joy. The journey has ended, but the extent of the it was amazing.

You might listen to this set four or five times before enough new music builds up in your iTunes library to push it to the side. You’ll probably hear “Don’t You Worry Child” being played at shows and in clubs for a while after that, but eventually new music will replace it in every DJ’s set. And with so much new music being made, it will be unlikely that you listen to Swedish House Mafia very often or as frequently as you do now. But in ten years, when you’re going through your music collection and stumble upon this set, you will remember all the good times you had that Swedish House Mafia provided the soundtrack for. And those memories will never be replaced.

Writing for the Wantickets blog is a lot of fun. While I’m at work I get to listen to music and write about it all day, and when I go to shows I get a chance to share my stories with an audience. Most importantly I work with great people united by a passion for electronic music. One thing I don’t like is how often I hyperbolize what I write, but it is very tough to avoid. Every song is epic, every drop is enormous and every bass line is filthy.

I’m not the only one guilty of this, you can find hyperbole on any EDM blog and as a reader I constantly find myself doubting how great a song or show is no matter what synonym or superlative for “good” the reviewer uses. I bring this up because I’m sure other people feel this way too. And I just wanted to let those people know that I will not be using hyperbole in this post. I don’t need to, and honestly I can’t. Everything I witnessed on March 8th and March 9th at Los Angeles State Historic Park was so good it was borderline indescribable, but as it seems to be my job, I will try my best to put into words what I was fortunate enough to take part in at the last two nights Masquerade Motel will ever open its doors.

Both nights of Masquerade Motel featured incredible line ups and I could write pages about the artists I saw leading up to Swedish House Mafia, but if your looking for reviews of them you have come to the wrong place. Going into the weekend I thought Masquerade Motel would be about the other artists as much as it was about Swedish House Mafia. As soon as I stepped through its entrance on Friday I realized it wasn’t. Temperatures were in the fifties when we got there and rain was expected. That is what we in LA call miserable weather. After getting through security faster than I have at any other show, my roommate and I went straight to the main stage. Not because Mat Zo excited us more than Clockwork, but because we were determined to be as close as possible when the party truly started.

We started dancing from enjoying Mat Zo’s set and because we were trying to warm up. Mat Zo played a great set which I can barely recall now. I couldn’t tell you what songs he played, but he effortlessly melded different genres together ranging from trance to disco and had the crowd grooving throughout.

I was thoroughly impressed as Otto Knows took over, and wondered what he had in store. The answer was a great set that will be remembered for the pouring rain that tried to dampen the mood. Mother nature failed to kill the spirit as the rain soaked thousands of resilient ravers. We stuck it out, and by the end of his set the skies closed back up. Otto Knows was clearly appreciative of the crowd’s resolve as he left the stage.

After a short break Alesso made his entrance. He ran through all of his songs and even threw in some Daft Punk, assuring me that I am not the only one who is way excited for their new album. His yet to be released remix of One Republic’s “If I Lose Myself” had the entire crowd singing as we lost ourselves in the thousands of like minded strangers. He ended with a beautiful edit of “Years” that could have sent any other audience home buzzing, but this crowd had other plans. After he finished I cheered for him as much as I did for knowing Swedish House Mafia was on next. Everything so far had been great, but for me it was like the bread restaurants give you before they bring your meal. And this main course was about to be phenomenal.

Saturday should have felt completely different. It was sunny and I went with different people than the night before. We got there and went to catch Monsta performing in the tent. The tent itself was very cool as it had chandeliers hanging and really embodied its name of “The Ballroom.” While my friends were dancing I decided to leave and go to the main stage. I had seen Swedish House Mafia less than a day before but was already impatiently awaiting their ten o’clock start time.

AN21 & Max Vangeli played a great set that, like Mat Zo’s, went in one ear and out the other. The two work really well together, and while this weekend was about celebrating the end of three friends’ joint venture, it was great to see two more friends band together and raise their status together as one.

Zedd came on next and surprised me with how much energy he was able to get out of the crowd. Zedd’s style lends itself to incorporating a variety of energetic music and he mixed in some dubstep and even got the audience to do the Harlem Shake. This stuck out at a stage that was otherwise dominated by house. The difference was embraced by the crowd as everyone jumped and danced around. While I was enjoying the show I found myself once again counting the hours until the Swedes would take over.

Zedd finished and Alesso once again took the stage. Having seen him the night before I wondered if he was going to play a different set. He didn’t, but I still enjoyed his set, as I can listen to the same hour and a half of music night after night if it is good enough, and Alesso’s set was that good. With the timing required for lighting and pyrotechnics playing a different set each night would have required much more work than simply dialing up different tracks on the turntables. I danced just as hard as I had the night before, but once again found myself cheering the fact that Swedish House Mafia was coming on as much as I was for Alesso. Once he finished I realized that I was about to see the three Swedes perform for the last time together.

It’s hard for me to separate the hours of 10 to 12 on Friday and Saturday night from each other. They were blurred together before Saturday night came to an end. I can assure you that there were differences. I know this because two of the tracks that Swedish House Mafia played on Saturday blew me away. I had never heard them before and sadly might never hear them again. I also noticed that they switched the order of other tracks as well.

They played their remix of Coldplay’s “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall” later in their set on Saturday. They also switched from waving American flags on Friday to waving the California flag on Saturday. It was a smart move as the California flag got a drastically better reaction from the crowd.

While they introduced their crew in the same way each night, and ended the introductions by saying that the crowd was the most important part, the tone they said it with on Friday seemed more sincere. You could tell the trio appreciated the tens of thousands of people who braved the cold and the rain to see them perform one last time. Fans always get thanked and praised at raves, but this time it felt different. Everyone there that cold windy night proved they were dedicated Swedish House Mafia fans in a way that few others can claim and I think everyone from those onstage to those way in the back realized how special that was. While these were differences that the crowds at large experienced, my personal experience was different each night as well.

On Friday I was with my roommate for when Swedish House Mafia took the stage. We both are huge fans and it was great to experience such an amazing concert with a close friend. We didn’t try to talk much over the loud music, but had so much to say on the journey home. On Saturday as Alesso finished I realized I had been by myself for almost five hours, but at a rave you are never alone. In the thirty minutes leading up to the Swedes I started talking to a girl who needed a lighter. She too was by herself, and had also been there the night before. When I asked her why she came back she said as soon as they finished on Friday night she knew there was no way she could miss Saturday. It was just too special of an experience. While I had bought both tickets well in advance I knew exactly how she felt, and why she justified spending an absurd amount of money to see the same people perform two nights in a row. When they came on we sang and danced together like we were good friends.

Much of Swedish House Mafia’s two sets were the same. Both began with “We Came, We Raved, We Loved” transitioning into “Greyhound.” This beginning is honestly the best way to start a set as it reminds the crowd what Swedish House represents before launching into one of the most incredible songs ever written.

Every Swedish House track, and tracks closely associated with the group were played. “Together” was played when the curtain went back up, “Miami 2 Ibiza” was played largely without the lyrics as the crowd’s rapping skills were put to the test, “One” was dropped after the crowd was thanked for being amazing and featured an incredible hip hop breakdown. “Antidote,” “Leave the World Behind,” “In My Mind,” and “Calling” also had memorable placements in each set. Of course the two most memorable songs were “Don’t You Worry Child” and “Save The World.”

“Don’t You Worry Child” was dropped toward the end of the set and made the crowd explode with cheer. I’m not sure if they killed the sound as the chorus came on or if it was just everyone screaming the lyrics at the top of their lungs, but all I could hear was the thousands of different voices belting out “Don’t you worry, don’t you worry child” in unison. It was so loud I swear they could hear it downtown.

Of course “Save the World” was reserved for the encore. After killing the sound and lights, a hauntingly beautiful series of piano chords rang out. They built and sped up before turning into the actual song. Saying the crowd was overcome by emotion knowing that this was the last chance they would have to ‘save the world’ would be an understatement. Every single word and every single note was belted out by every single person in attendance. It wasn’t amazing, it wasn’t epic, it was magical. During both nights this was a moment that I will never forget, and will get chills thinking about decades from now.

The trio was right to thank the crowd for making each night so special. The people who went to Masquerade Motel truly embodied the Swedish House message. We came, we raved, and we loved. There was nothing but good vibes flowing through the crowd both nights. It is impossible to feel anything but unity when watching three good friends perform together. While they are up there everyone in the crowd seems like a friend as well.

Each night after “Save The World” ended and the crowd stopped cheering an acoustic version of “Don’t You Worry Child” came on. The stage had closed and the Swedes had left, but the crowds stood there singing as the credits rolled. We were all in disbelief of what we had just participated in and trying to let the last remnants sink in. I’m not sure how LA State Historic Park became labeled as such, but after this weekend I can think of a very good reason. That park is the site of the final two nights of Masquerade Motel. That thought hit me hard as I was leaving on Saturday. While it is sad to think I have seen Swedish House Mafia for the last time, I am happy to say I have seen them at their finest.

Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso and Axwell will go on to have very successful individual careers. I can say this because they already have very successful individual careers. Whatever their reasons for starting Swedish House Mafia were, and whatever their reasons for ending it are irrelevant. The world was blessed to have them together for any length of time. And if they ever decide to reunite I will not be mad that this was not their actually their ‘one last tour.’ I will come, I will rave and I will love. Because that is the Swedish House Mafia way.
