Dillon Francis wins my vote for best cover art of the year. I was sold on “Messages” before I even listened to the preview, but boy am I happy I pressed play. The song is all about decoding the messages you are getting from that person eyeing you up from across the dance floor, though it doesn’t take a genius to realize that Dillon Francis is sending the message to shake your booty when the song drops. It is a large, rowdy moombathon drop that Francis has proven to be a master of. The preview cuts off just after the drop, ending with an message telling listeners they won’t have to wait very long to hear the rest of the song, as it will be released on Mad Decent March 26th.

Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us! We’ve been following your releases for a little while now, most recently got to listen to your new track Togi, which we’re totally loving. But for our fans who may not know you yet, give us a quick introduction to you guys and your sound.

Dzeko: Dzeko & Torres are Julian Dzeko & Luis Torres, two best friends who love music.

Torres: What we play and produce is a combination of Big Room electro and progressive house. But apart from what we play and produce, we are MASSIVE music fans. We love tech, deep house, indie rock, and everything in between.  

Dzeko: The EDM scene in Toronto has always been massive. Because it’s so strong and so many friends of ours are in the industry it’s been amazing growing up and being able to see the biggest DJ’s from around the world playing amazing shows in Toronto, that’s definitely been a huge inspiration.

Torres: Yeah it’s amazing that people like Art Department, Deadmau5, Azari&III, Zeds Dead, MSTRKRFT, Adam K and so many more all came from this city. I think it says a lot about the music fans here and how much electronic music is part of Toronto’s culture. The music is so eclectic and there are many different clubs and parties that all promote different styles of music and I think that’s definitely been inspirational having access to that. We just want to make great music that we love and that other people will love too.

Your first EP, “HEY” is out today on Dim Mak and it’s been getting huge support from big names like Deniz Koyu, Nari & Milani and Steve Aoki. Tell us a little about it. What was it like going into the studio and putting it together?

Dzeko: The HEY ep is 3 tracks, “Hey”, “check this out”, and “Buppy”. It’s a big room electro/house EP. Each of the tracks were actually made months apart from each other and it wasn’t until Autoerotique & Steve Aoki heard them that we decided to put them together for the EP.

Torres: Yeah originally Aoki wanted to release “HEY”, and then we sent him “check this out” and he asked if we could turn it into an EP. We had just finished “Buppy” at the time and wanted to round out the EP with a third track and we though it fit perfectly so we decided to throw it on as well. The whole thing happened very organically and we couldn’t be happier that it’s coming out on Dim Mak!

What are some of your musical influences?

Torres: I like everything from indie rock, to tech/deep house, big vocal ballads to classical. I’m really just a massive music fan.

Dzeko: Me too. Everyone from Tiesto to Jay Z. Guys that work very hard at their craft and know how to stay current.

What are some of your favorite tracks right now?

Torres: We have a bootleg we did for our live sets called “can’t stop the pressure spectrum” that we love playing out right now, it really goes off.

Dzeko: I’m a big fan of Cazzette’s Beam Me Up.

If you could collaborate with any other producer or vocalist right now, who would it be?

Torres: I would love to collab on something with NERVO, and ever since I heard “Youth” by Foxes I’ve been dying to work with her.

Dzeko: Adele, 100%, and I’d like to do something with Cazzette. I love everything their doing right now.

Have any interesting pre-gig rituals? Post-gig?

Torres: We’re both huge food lovers. Post gig if we’re playing in Toronto the regular late night must hit is Canton Chile for some spicy beef and “cold tea,” haha.

Dzeko: Haha yeah for sure! Canton Chile man, pure heart burn, haha.

As we wrap up 2012, what have been some of your most memorable moments? Have you guys found yourselves star-struck by some of the places you’ve played or people you’ve worked with?

Dzeko: 2012 was an amazing year. Definitely all the support we’ve been getting from guys like Tiesto, Steve Aoki, Hardwell, Deniz Koyu, Paul Oakenfold, David Guetta has been a dream come true. Hearing your music for the first time on the radio shows and in sets by the guys you’ve looked up to for years is definitely memorable.

Torres: Yeah we’ve played a lot of great shows this year also. London Homecoming tent party with Bingo Players was definitely memorable. Probably our favourite show to date, London knows how to party!

Dzeko: We’re confirmed to play some of the biggest EDM festivals in the world next year so we couldnt be more excited for that! We’re also currently signing with agencies in North America and Europe, so we’re super excited to get out and tour and meet tons of new people and play our music for them!

Torres: Yes, I’m really excited to get the music were working on right now out to everyone in 2013. I think it’s the best stuff we’ve done so far and I cant wait to be playing it out very soon.
